We have great news for all Muslims out there!

“Tokyo HALAL Deli and Café”, a food court specialized in HALAL food that has received HALAL certificate from Japan Islamic Trust, opened in the Yotsuya campus of Sophia University on September 29th (Thurs).
Although Sophia University is known to have a school motto based on Catholic learning from Christianity, but they are also the headquarter for Islamic research in Japan, and have their own Islam Research Center. I was very curious of what kind of menus they were serving, so I went and visited on their grand opening day. September 29th was also the first day of the fall semester, so there were many students in the campus. The food court is on the 4th floor of a building called Hoffman Hall located in the back of the campus. When I came to the food court, students were lined up all the way, even outside the entrance! Although it was lunch time before the beginning of classes, it was much more popular than I have expected. By taking a glance at the people inside the food court, 90% were Japanese students; mostly female students, and the remaining 10% were foreign exchange students including Muslims.

I chose the Chicken Fried Set from among 8 lunch set menus available for 500 yen including a drink. It was very good. Hopefully this will help speed up the implementation of Muslim-friendly services in other Universities in Japan!

*Please ask the staff if people other than the students of Sophia University use the cafeteria.
