Written by Mrs. Kamran

Eid is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims world wide that marks the end of Ramadan.

During this holy month Ramadan Yokohama Masjid is the busiest Masjid. Our Muslim brothers prepare Iftar (Iftar means the meal eaten by Muslims after sunset during Ramadan) and dinner for the ones who are fasting followed by Tarawih (Tarawih refers to extra prayers performed by Muslims at night in the Islamic month of Ramadan)

Eid falls on the first day of the Shawwal. Muslims are not permitted to fast on Eid day. Eid has a particular Salat (Islamic prayer).

When I was coming to Japan I can’t imagine that I can enjoy Eid same as I use to enjoy in my country. However it’s not the same Eid how I use to spent in my home country also it’s not that bad either here early in the morning we visit mosque we meet and greet our friends. Eid presents were given to children in the form of goody bags filled with chocolates after Eid prayers are over. On Eid day not only everyone wears new cloths but also girls apply hina (hina is the application of henna as a temporary form of skin decoration ) some families arranged small get together where we enjoyed food. There are different varieties of food specially cooked on Eid day. As its celebration time sweets are the part of this festival (weight conscious people be cautious. What food we eat is a big question because we Pakistanis are born to eat.

Eid is not only about wearing beautiful and expensive cloths but also people are supposed to give obligatory charity on behalf of each of their family member to the needy or poor before Eid day or at least before Eid prayer. This will allow everybody to share the joy of Eid and won’t feel depressed.

Also some years back we couldn’t have imagined Eid would be this exciting in Japan.

While you are busy celebrating Eid, don’t forget needy and poor this is what Islam teaches us. hope you had a great Eid.
