This October, I went for a business trip to Japan for a week. It was a short time, but I had a great time. It was really fun, I have gain some new experiences and I really enjoyed myself.

There was a Japanese halal restaurant in Kyoto where my colleagues and I went to. The restaurant named Ganko is located in Sanjo, Kyoto, Japan. So, if you are visiting Kyoto and in search for Japanese halal cuisine, I’d suggest you check out this restaurant. To get there, take bus No.4/No.17/No.205, and get off at Sanjo.

My friend who recommended this place said that we must make a reservation at least three days in advance. If you need further information, I would gladly provide you with the contact person’s number.

The halal menu they provide is a bento set* and it costs about 3000yen~6000yen per person. The most expensive bento looks the most delicious, but as a young man with limited budget, I chose the 3000yen. It was still rather expensive for me but I think sometimes it`s worth trying a new cuisine.

The good thing here is that they separate the haram (forbidden for moslem) and the halal (allowed) food. Not only the dishes, but also the cooking tools and utensils etc. This means that they guarantee the food is halal. They allowed me to check out their kitchen by chance. Recently, they are preparing to add more halal Japanese cuisines on their menu.

*Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice, fish or meat, with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container. – Wikipedia
