Toba City in Mie Prefecture is famous for its sea-culture, especially for its pearl and Ama-san (Japanese traditional woman divers). For your information, Toba is a birthplace of pearl cultivation by Kokichi Mikimoto and since it is located in Ise-Shima National Park, the home of half Japanese woman divers, you can find a lot of Ama figures in this city. One of the best museums to learn about the sea – culture in Toba City is Toba Sea-Folk Museum. The museum has more than 57,000 collections in its exhibition. The museum features 2,026 m2 collection room, 499 m2 research rooms, 387 m2 experience program rooms, and 7 sections main exhibition including Shima’s Ama Divers section.

The good news for Muslim visitor: this museum has a prayer room in their building. The prayer room located in the second floor, together with the area of the museum’s photo gallery. There is prayer mat inside the prayer room. Please ask the receptionist if you want to use the prayer room.

From Toba Station, take a bus bound for Ijika and get off at “Umi no Hakubutsukan” and walk for 7 minutes.

*The museum is closed on 26-30 June and 26-30 December.
Admission fees: 800 JPY (over 18 y.o.), 400 JPY (under 18 y.o.)
