Written by Farid Putra san
Basically, the muslim community in Japan likes to discover the local place near their home or workplace which serving or selling varieties of Halal products. Whether it is foods and drinks in a restaurant or even the ingredients of Halal stuff for cooking. Then after we found some, we actually like to share information with family, and friends inside the community. The more variety of product the store selling the more sounds good to us. It means the are lots of alternatives for us to prepare our meals on a daily basis.
If you are in Japan and living in Tokyo, at least you are a lucky person because the option of the supermarket or store which providing the Halal products are greater than other cities in Japan. Especially, in the middle of Tokyo near Azabu-Juuban area, there is a supermarket called Nissin. Or the full name is Nissin World Delicatessen. This supermarket operated since a long time ago serving Japanese and expat, specifically stocking up a lot of products which are needed by a large number of foreigners in Tokyo city. For Muslim person’s perspective, we of course so happy that we are able to find a lot of meat products with Halal signature and certification such as chicken, beef, lamb, turkey. There are varieties of ingredients and spices too on the shelves their stacking.
Halal Meats and Ingredients
The halal meat itself can be categorized into the fresh meat section or the frozen shelve section. On the fresh meat order, basically we ask directly to a butcher there and requesting what kind of meat we want and the cut size (if you want it to be cut). Last time I went there, I bought halal meat of beef 2 kg with 3 cm cut size for “Rendang” (Indonesian menu) several days before Eid Mubarak, because it took a long time for preparing the menu. It is so good, the beef is very suitable for rendang and some curry-based menu, which I bought top side part of it at the time.
In the frozen section, there are ranges of many Halal brands such as Sadia, Hajji Baba, Mana, Copagril, Frangosul, etc. If you like to make your own “Halal Hotdog”, there is chicken, turkey, or lamb sausage too. On the shelves near the cashier, there are spices, ingredients, processed foods with Halal signature such as curry paste, chili sauce, instant noodles, and baked beans from many brands such as Indofood, Kokita, and AYAM. You could not find a lot of bread in a regular convenience store in Japan with Halal signature, but there is a halal bread called “Halal Bilal Bread” in Nissin. For the fruit, you could buy dates from Tunisia with 200g size of packaging there.
Finally, there are probably some of you cannot wait to go to this Supermarket as a first-timer. Or some of you will go again as a returning customer want to check some of the new halal products they are selling.
